It is hard to say if you are correct or wrong. But there are proven methods that remove our doubts if we were attuned.

There are three common ways for an attunement! First, the more traditional one is that a Reiki Master attunes you either hands on (in person) or via distant attunement. This is because the Reiki Master (RM) has been attuned to the energy, therefore, they already have the "codes" and then passes on to the receiver. You can request a Usui Reiki Level 1 on the board.

Secondly, if you are a spiritual person who has a strong connection to your Higher Self, you can ask your Higher Self to be connected and to receive the attunement.

Thirdly, you may read from a prepared script by a RM, that by reading the script you can be attuned. But to receive this attunement, is the same as receiving distant Attunement, where you will set a side about 15-20mins undisturbed to receive the attunement.

Simply by meditating does not automatically attune you. I know Sensei Usui meditated 21 days to receive the attunement, but i believe he has been meditating even before Mount Kamura. It is not impossible, but may not be the most effective way.
