By Karthika Nair~~~~~It was about 3:00pm.Dad, Mum and I had just finished our lunch. We were in Varanasi. My Father was posted there as the President of the Selection board, of the Indian Air Force.
The door bell rang. Dad got it. At first he didn’t recognize the visitor .After some low exchanges I heard loud laughter and much cheer.
It was Uncle Jack. Better known as Jumping Jack, Squadron Leader Chakravorthy had been a Para jumper of formidable reputation of the Indian Air Force and a dear friend of Dad’s.
Uncle Jack had taken premature retirement and he and Dad had lost touch with each other, thereafter.
They had a lot of catching up to do. Uncle Jack had quite a history that the IAF knew of.
He had been married for several years and in the first ten years had, had no children. He had contracted some rare disease. A result of ‘wayward activities’ as he described it to be.
He had passed on the ailment to his wife as well. As a result, Aunty Chak, could bear no children.
Dad, who knew of all of this, gingerly, enquired after it.
Uncle J said he and Aunty had been completely cured some years earlier and that they went on to have a son. Much rejoicing! Dad was extremely happy, for them.
“We owe it ALL to Sathya Sai Baba,” Uncle Jack said.
I have never seen a funnier expression on my Father’s face. And then Dad let off a tirade of not so polite adjectives, describing Swami, whom he had thought of, as a regular trickster, until then.
Uncle Jack listened patiently, smiling all through, till Dad had finished and then asked “May I, now?”
The couple had gone to every good Doctor in the country and ended up dejected. Diagnosis? Yes. Cure? No. They had gone and taken treatment, even in more advanced countries, but had returned, with relief but no permanent cure.
A neighbor was planning a trip to White field, near Bangalore, where they were stationed then. Swami has an Ashram, by the name of Brindavan, there. The unfortunate couple, though reluctant, at first, went along. As they sat for darshan, Swami glided out.
Swami, almost always walked, as if His feet never touched the ground. So gentle, so smooth and fluid were ALL His movements.
Swami came out for darshan and when He reached, Aunty Chak , He said “Go in” as in, instructing her to go for interview!
Now the done thing was, if anyone from the family was called in, the others could automatically join in. So Uncle Jack followed Aunty into the Interview room.
Swami came in to, the interview room, after darshan.
He asked Aunty to open her palms. She did. Swami materialized Vibhooti (sacred ash) out of thin air and filled her palms. He did likewise for Uncle J too. Then He instructed them to eat it.
Uncle J hesitated. Swami looked at him meaningfully and said in a compelling tone.”Just eat it” This time he did. Nothing more was said or asked. ”Now go” Said Swami and turned to the others in the interview room.
They returned. Aunty got up the next morning to find herself TOTALLY CURED.”Ami seregechi” she happily announced, in Bengali, to her husband! (I am healed!)
They had both been suffering from severe pain due to pus formation, while passing urine, for about a decade then. Uncle was healed too, he discovered. In more than ten years, for the first time, their bodies had functioned, normally, without giving them distress!
They returned to White field the following week to thank Swami.
Swami came straight to Aunty, in the darshan line, where she sat with hundreds of lady devotees, and smilingly asked, “No Kutty?’’(No little ones?)Aunty was overcome with mixed emotions of grief and gratitude and broke down.
”On 23rd November, you will have a son. Go happily now!”Swami assured Aunty.
Exalted the couple returned. Sure enough, in a couple of months Aunty showed all signs of being pregnant.
They went to her gynecologist, for a routine checkup. The doctor ran some tests and declared “You do have some growth, in your uterus, but you are not pregnant” It was a blow, they could barely take.
